"Free services"- always come at a price

I learned a huge lesson from a young lady I had known for many many years. I wanted to expand my business, so I thought I would offer a free session in exchange for the hands-on opportunity to learn another aspect of my business. What I didn't expect in return, after already giving her several hundreds of dollars in session time and photos, was what free would actually cost.... our friendship.  Sadly, it seems what I offered for "free" was just never enough.

The time it takes

I have been asked if I will "reduce my fees" or do a "free session". What these potential customers don't consider, is the time involved in preparing for a photo session, choosing/hauling gear, set up a time to shoot each individual pose/props, packing all the gear back up, the time it takes to download the images, sorting images, getting the proofs online for the customer to proof, editing images, and finally... getting the images to the lab and back to the customer.

I'm a professional

I've worked my butt off. I've paid my dues.  I've purchased all this fabulous equipment.  I am a professional.  My knowledge and expertise, even if it's simply a matter of explaining how to take a decent, candid photo, on a cell phone - it has value. You'd not expect a doctor, lawyer, accountant, or other professional to provide free assistance - I should be treated with the same respect.

It takes away from my paying customers

The things that people ask me to do for free are actually offered as a paid service through my business.  If you were a paying customer, how would you feel if you knew I was offering services free to other people just because "they asked"?  It's not fair to my existing customers.

Most people don't value things they get for free

'Free' is a gift, and like any gift, it comes with no obligations or expectations. And, like any gift, is up to the giver how much will be given or even whether or not they want to give it, meaning you can't expect or demand gifts and have no right to get ticked or testy if the person decides not to give it.

It doesn't stop at one request

In the beginning, I used to be much more generous with my "free" services - that is until I got to the point where it was detrimental to my own life and well-being. One of the things I discovered is that a significant percentage of the time when I gave services for free, they would come back - often repeatedly - for more "free" services.  It has to end somewhere.
